Why Pretoria, specifically

Pretoria carries more custom-jewellery workshops per capita than any other SA city. Three drivers underlie the density. First, the older jewellery-trade-school routes: Tshwane University of Technology runs the most established jewellery design and manufacture programme in SA, and the resulting workforce concentrates around the city. Second, a settled customer base of civil servants, academics, foreign service staff, and professionals who commission rather than buy off-the-shelf. Third, lower commercial-property cost relative to Sandton or Cape Town V&A, which makes appointment-only workshop economics viable for smaller operators.

The result is a working ecosystem where the bespoke-commission route is the default rather than the exception, and where pricing is competitive precisely because the workshops compete with each other rather than with mall retail.

Variance within each workshop’s quote range reflects stone-sourcing channel (workshop-direct from a Bedfordview tape vs sourced through the workshop’s own bourse contacts), platinum grade (950 vs 900), head style, and finish detail. The five quotes overlap meaningfully, which is what a competitive bespoke market looks like.

For comparison: the same brief at a Sandton chain-mall jeweller (Browns, American Swiss, Sterns, NWJ) typically runs R180,000 to R260,000 for an off-the-rack equivalent. The PTA bespoke premium over Bedfordview wholesale-direct (~R85,000 to R110,000 for the same stone-and-setting brief) typically runs 15 to 30 percent.

The named workshops

Metal Artist Jewellery (Hatfield). Hatfield-based workshop with a heavy emphasis on contemporary design language, hand-engraving, and CAD-supported bespoke. Bresco Jewellers (Brooklyn, founded 1967). One of the oldest continuously-operating PTA workshops. Family-run, multi-generational client base, strong on classical-design briefs and on restoration of inherited pieces. The 1967 founding date is a meaningful trust signal in a market where many operators are 5 to 15 years old.

Beaudell Designs (Lynnwood). Lynnwood-based workshop with a focused bespoke-engagement-ring practice. Strong on hand-illustration of design concepts before CAD commitment, which clients commonly find useful when iterating on a design direction.

Your Diamonds (Menlyn precinct). Menlyn-adjacent workshop with a relatively younger client base and a strong online consultation funnel for clients who cannot visit PTA in person before commissioning. CAD review and design iteration handled remotely with one or two in-person appointments for final selection and collection.

How the PTA bespoke process actually runs

1. Initial consultation, 60 to 90 minutes, no commitment. Brief, budget range, stone preference (lab vs natural, certified vs uncertified, shape, weight), mounting style preference, finger size. The workshop sketches preliminary design directions and quotes a range.
2. Stone selection. The workshop sources 2 to 5 candidate stones matching spec, either from in-house tape or from the broader Bedfordview wholesale network. Client inspects under loupe at the workshop. GIA report numbers verified live against gia.edu/report-check.
3. CAD design and approval. Workshop produces a CAD render of the mounting around the selected stone, typically with 2 to 4 iteration rounds before client sign-off. Renders are realistic enough to commit to.

• Drive time. Sandton to Brooklyn is 50 to 70 minutes off-peak via the N1. The full bespoke process involves 2 to 3 design-consultation appointments plus a collection visit; 8 to 12 hours of total drive time across the commission.
• The Bedfordview alternative. JHB readers we hear from often choose a Bedfordview workshop instead (35 to 45 minutes from Sandton) for the shorter drive at comparable bespoke-pricing levels. The Bedfordview corridor carries fewer pure-bespoke ateliers than PTA but more workshops with deep stone inventory and direct manufacturer access.
