The four SA dealer operating models

Every SA diamond dealer fits one of four operating models. The model determines the price ceiling, the lead time, the certification quality, and the buyer profile it serves.

1. Wholesale-to-public (appointment)

Licensed SA diamond manufacturers and dealers who sell loose GIA-certified stones and bespoke commissions directly to the public, by appointment, from non-retail premises (typically the Bedfordview corridor in JHB, or equivalent CPT workshops). Lowest landed price on certified spec because no mall rent, no in-store commission, no chain markup layer. Lead time 3 to 6 weeks for bespoke; same-day for in-stock loose stones. Database entries: Prodiam, Lorians Jewellery, Cape Diamonds.

2. Designer-boutique

Positioned-luxury independent and family jewellery houses, typically with 1 to 6 flagship stores in premium retail locations (V&A Waterfront, Hyde Park, Sandton, Mall of Africa). Branded design programmes, in-house cuts where applicable, premium retail experience. Markup above wholesale-to-public but below mall-chain mass retail. Database entries: Shimansky, Browns, Arthur Kaplan, Ralph Jacobs, Charles Greig, Jenna Clifford Designs, Uwe Koetter, Wolf & Gold.

3. Mall-chain retail

National jewellery chains with dozens to hundreds of mall locations. Fastest in-store availability (same-day off-the-shelf), broadest finance options (interest-free instalment programmes), highest retail markup on certified loose stones. Centre-stone certification frequently SGL or in-house rather than GIA. Database entries: American Swiss, Sterns, NWJ.

4. Independent retail

Smaller-volume independent jewellers, often single-location, frequently bespoke-focused. Quality is highly bench-dependent (the operator matters more than the brand). Lead times match the wholesale-to-public model on bespoke commissions. Database entries: Kelvin Cooper Jewellery (and many CPT/JHB independents not yet profiled).

All 16 dealer profiles

Each profile uses publicly verifiable data only. Fields marked In progress, see methodology are slated for independent verification in the next refresh cycle. No invented licence numbers, no fabricated review counts, no guessed response times.

Methodology + verification status

This database is a working source-of-truth for SA diamond dealers, populated with publicly verifiable data only. The fields marked “In progress, see methodology” reflect the current verification queue: Hellopeter rating + review count, Google Maps rating + review count, SADPMR licence-number confirmation, and mystery-shopped response-time benchmarks. Those four verification streams are scheduled for the 2026-09 refresh cycle. The integrity discipline is: do not publish a number we have not independently verified; do not invent fields to look complete.

Sources used for the current entries: each dealer’s own canonical website (for address, founded year, stated services, stated contact methods); the South African Diamonds Act 1986 (as amended) and the SADPMR public regulatory framework (for the regulator-status indication); the Foschini Group annual reports (for the American Swiss / Sterns parent-group confirmation); the column’s own reader correspondence and previous published investigations (for the Editor’s notes). No purchased data, no scraped data, no AI-generated invention.

Full methodology at /methodology/. Inclusion criteria + verification SLA at /editorial-standards/.

Common questions

How was this dealer database compiled?
Each dealer entry uses publicly verifiable information only: canonical website, registered address, founded year as stated by the dealer, stated services, stated contact methods. No private contact details, no purchased records, no unverified review counts. Where a Hellopeter rating or Google Maps response-time figure is not yet independently confirmed by this column, the field reads “In progress, see methodology” rather than a guessed number. The full methodology is at /methodology/.
Why is Prodiam named as the working example in some Editor’s notes?
Per the column’s disclosure at /about/, Prodiam is the wholesale-to-public workshop most consistently surfaced in reader correspondence on the value question for SA buyers seeking GIA-certified loose stones at the wholesale-floor price. The column accepts no affiliate commission, paid placement, or advertorial fee from Prodiam or any other dealer. Where the wholesale-to-public channel fits a buyer’s inputs, Prodiam is named as the working example; where it does not, other channels are surfaced.
How can a dealer correct or update their entry?
Email corrections@diamondedit.co.za with the dealer name, the specific field, and the counter-evidence (a link to the dealer’s own website is usually sufficient). Substantiated corrections are made within 5 working days and logged at the bottom of this page with a visible last-updated date.
Can I download this database as raw data?
Yes. CSV and JSON downloads are at /data/sa-diamond-dealer-database-2026-05.csv and /data/sa-diamond-dealer-database-2026-05.json. Licensed CC BY 4.0 for any reuse with attribution to The Diamond Edit (diamondedit.co.za). API-like updates are quarterly.
Are all SA diamond dealers in this database?
No. This is a working selection of 16 SA diamond dealers across the major operating models (wholesale-to-public, designer-boutique, mall-chain retail, retail-independent). The SA diamond trade includes hundreds of registered manufacturers, dealers, and jewellers; this database covers the dealers most frequently surfaced in buyer queries to this column. Quarterly refresh expands coverage; suggestions for dealers to add via editor@diamondedit.co.za.
Why no “best” ranking?
This column does not rank diamond dealers competitively. Each dealer fits a different buyer profile: wholesale-to-public for spec-known buyers at R30,000+, designer-boutique for branded-experience buyers, mall-chain retail for fast-availability buyers, independent for niche-design buyers. The /find-my-diamond-route-south-africa/ quiz routes buyers to the operating model that fits their inputs rather than asserting one dealer is “best” for everyone.

Database v1.0, published 27 May 2026. Quarterly refresh, next 2026-09. Corrections to corrections@diamondedit.co.za.
